What to say when there is nothing to say.
Five things to say to a dying person that are not "it will be okay." Based on two years of bedside experience.
ReadI am Raina Niessen, an end of life doula in White Rock. I provide support, education, and coaching for people who are dying, their families, and people considering Medical Assistance in Dying across the Lower Mainland. I work with clients of all backgrounds, and I specialize in marginalized and oppressed groups. No hidden pricing. No flinching from the hard parts.
Raina Niessen, White Rock
None of this is theoretical. All of it has been earned at bedsides, in hospices, and on the phone at midnight.
End of life doula training at Douglas College. Supporting member, End of Life Doula Association of Canada. Extensive prior work with adults in hospice care, with a Registered Care Aid Diploma.
I have attended Medical Assistance in Dying provisions across hospital, hospice, and private home settings. I support families before, during, and after, in plain language and on their timeline.
I specialize in working with marginalized and oppressed groups because that is where the system fails hardest. Queer, secular, immigrant, working class. You will not have to explain yourself.
A plain spoken end of life doula in White Rock, working across Surrey, Tsawwassen, Cloverdale, Langley, and the Lower Mainland.
My approach is open and honest. I have extensive work experience with adults in hospice care, and I have a respect and a deep understanding of how people cope and still find fulfillment, despite limitations. I have attended Medical Assistance in Dying. I have sat through bad hospital deaths. I have helped families coordinate hospice, navigate the system, draft Representation Agreements, and have the conversations they could not have on their own.
I work with clients of all backgrounds, and I specialize in working with marginalized and oppressed groups. I have specific experience supporting Medical Assistance in Dying. I advocate for clients and promote self advocacy among them, in medical and personal contexts where a lack of knowledge or respect may be negatively affecting their care.
I trained at Douglas College. I am a supporting member of the End of Life Doula Association of Canada and I carry professional liability insurance. I am not a chaplain, a spiritual director, or a healer. I am a guide who knows the system, the forms, the rooms, and the silences. I take a small caseload on purpose. The work is too important to dilute.
I do not provide medical care or administer medications. I do not dress, transport, or prepare bodies. I do not give legal advice. I do not perform Indigenous, Sikh, Hindu, or any cultural ritual that is not mine to perform. I refer to specialists for all of the above, and I will tell you who they are.
I acknowledge and honour the ancestral guardians of the lands and waterways of what we call Canada: Métis, First Nations, and Inuit peoples and communities. Today, many Indigenous peoples continue to call these lands home and act as its stewards, and this responsibility extends to all people to share and care for this land for generations to come. Mortality Mentor practices on the unceded territories of the Semiahmoo, Katzie, Kwantlen, and Tsawwassen First Nations.
No sliding scales hidden behind a contact form. No call for pricing. You should know what it costs before you reach out.
It is about conversations. It is about wishes. Two sessions, one binder, one Representation Agreement, one family meeting if you want it. You will leave knowing what you want, and your family will know how to honour it.
For families ›Letters, recordings, written life history, video or audio, scrapbooks, memory textiles, ethical wills. Three to ten hours, scoped to what you actually want done before you die.

Discuss scope ›Specialist support before, during, and after a Medical Assistance in Dying provision. I do not provide medical care. I do everything else.
More about MAiD ›MAiD is legal in Canada. It still lands hard. I have attended MAiD provisions across hospital, hospice, and private homes. I know what happens and I do not flinch.
Doula support before, during, and after the provision. I do not administer medication. I do everything else.
Support with eligibility documentation, second opinions, and advocacy with MAiD assessors and care coordinators.
Family support and coordination: the day, the room, the people in it, and everything that comes after.
I have attended MAiD. I have sat through bad hospital deaths. I will sit with you.
A free call is the only way to know if we are a fit. You do not need to have decided anything. You just need to want a real conversation.

Raina makes your loved one feel like they are the most loved and special person in the world.
Raina brightened the room every time she walked in. Never downplaying the palliative care but was able to bring light to the days with caring and fun energy.
Raina is genuine, caring supportive, and personal. She uplifted us through the roughest of days with her positive energy.
I am not afraid of death. I am afraid of a bad one. Raina made sure my mother did not have one.

There is a version of the MAiD process that is lonely and rushed and medical. Then there is the version Raina creates. We are grateful we found the second one.
